Ex-Smiths feels the love for Manchester youngsters

Morrissey has lent his support to The Courteeners once more.

The Smiths legend has been a vocal supporter of his fellow Mancunians in the past, even going to see them play live.

Now the star has repeated the endorsement in a new interview in the US.

Speaking to radio station KRWC, the singer heaped praise on the band. "Every song was very strong and full of hooks and full of dynamics," he said. "I thought, 'This is great'."

Morrissey continued: "Because so many groups in England, they're hyped and they're huge and they're all over the press and they don't really actually have anything on offer… but it's different with The Courteeners, they actually do have very good, strong songs."

He added: "I think they will make it here (in the US) and I think you'll come across them."

the Courteeners, the new Boyfriends or the new Gene? Moz, you've got an incredible bad taste in new bands.... The Primitives were cool by the way...

Moz is, of course, correct again. The Courteeners are the greatest thing to come out of the UK this year. Viva la Fray!

I hope my music taste isn't that bad when i get to his age.

the front guy really wants to be Liam Gallagher or make his band into a copy of Oasis. It's so obvious its bordering on embarassing.

The Courteeners are terrible. If Moz had heard the majority of the throwaway bands of the dying indie scene he would know they are nothing special.

I love the Courteeners LP. Their live show is something else! A superb band. Hardly a surprise to see Morrissey heaping praise on them!!

Morrissey in his old age, bless him, is clearly getting 'Great' and 'a poor mans Oasis' mixed up

i don't mind the courteeners but i saw their interview in q and they kept going on about how they were fresh and original while coming out with the same nonsense every other manchester band has come out with since 1988your music is good enough without all that garbage

what is morrissey on? i used to be a massive fan but his latest few singles have been nothing short of terrible - and now he's getting behind one of the most over hyped band of the decade... some of fray's lyrics are pathetic, and the only good ones you can tell have been lifted directly from Moz, and the other three are just an unattractive, unoriginal and mediocre post libs backing band who just stand there plodding through tunes that could've easily ended up as a Jack Penate instrumental b-side/rantMoz get a grip

The Courteeners are a quality band, and until people have seen them live, they dont know what theyre missing !

It's all too easy to draw comparisons with The Courteeners and Oasis, namely because they both hail from Manchester. I doubt Midgeman & 20legend have actually listened to St Jude as musically the two bands sound nothing alike. If anything they sound more like a cross between The Smiths & The Artic Monkeys. I think The Courteeners will break the mold of bands only lasting one album such as Fratellis, kaiser Chiefs etc

It's all bullshit this wanking off about the Courteeners being just another indie band. their gigs are immense and their tracks Not Nineteen Forever, What Took You So Long? Bide Your Time and their new one That Kiss don't sound like anyone else around. there's a reason why they've got a massive UK tour happening soon and that's because they're fucking class - ten times better than the trendy likes of Black Kids and MGMT (one good song doesn't make a band).

Haven't they just sold out 2 nights at Shepherds Bush Empire and 2 nights at Manchester Apollo? Hardly the sign of a band winging it. They really should've had a number 1 single by now.

"a cross between The Smiths & The Artic Monkeys" but nowhere near as good as either of them... I think i'll stick to The Smiths and The Arctic Monkeys.

You do that Lipgloss, let me know when the new Smiths album is out, I'll be first in line. Don't get me wrong, I don't think The Courteeners are going to change the face of music. They're just a good band amongst a lot of mediocrity. They're awesome live too!

Jesus, this is more depressing than the weather.Get a grip Moz, you moron.

If you want a good band with a Smiths connection try The Cribs!

this is 2008... indie music is saturated with a lot more impressionable young kids who want to get behind bands who dont make souless r n b or plastic pop unit shifters, so selling out however many nights at whatever venue, proves how popular they are - not how good they are... and everyone knows, there isn't the most solid correlation between popularity and quality - The courteeners aren't great, they're alright. end of.

Not Nineteen is a an absolutely class tune, future classic etc etc they're a top band and theyve all remained in Manchester as opposed to most bands who get on the first train to Euston ready to stick their tongues up the arses of the London media.

Their tour is completely sold out appart from maybe 1 or 2 dates of the 18 dates, so its not a bad effort ! they are worth it !
