Muse aim to include 'hardest song ever' on new album

Trio reveal work on new record is already underway

Muse have told fans that they have begun work on their fifth studio album.

Answering questions from fans on the Muse forum, bassist Chris Wolstenholme confirmed that work had started on the follow-up to their 2006 album 'Black Holes And Revelations'.

Wolstenholme wrote: "It would be nice to have the album out in the second half of next year [2009] but we have not set ourselves any targets. It is more important for us to make the best album we have made to date, and if that means it comes out in 2010 then we don't mind."

The star did add that he and the rest of the band were hoping to make the earlier release date.

The trio also revealed that the album could feature the "hardest song" frontman Matt Bellamy has ever written.

"There is a new song in three parts, more of a symphony than a song, which I have been working on sporadically for many years," said the singer, answering another question. "As a large percentage of the composition is orchestral, I have never wanted to collaborate with a string arranger as they may make it 'theirs'. So I have been arranging the orchestral elements myself, which is taking a long time. It should hopefully make the next album as the final three tracks."

Meanwhile the band also joked that having recently been given honorary doctorates they have been enjoying using their new titles.

One fan asked whether they had used the phrase "Trust me, I'm a doctor", to which drummer Dominic Howard joked: "I use that line every day... I just hope I'm not in the situation where someone takes me seriously and asks me to do something. At that point I will just have to offer a healing drumbeat."

the both of you can fuck the hell off.muse are pure genius. 90,000 people cannot be wrong. Anyway, good stuff. Hmmm, would prefer the album coming out more '09 than '10, but we'll wait.

At least Muse are doing some relatively new - music wise. They're pushing the envelope within popular music more than most bands who are just identical copies of the 'indie' sound which has been done to death.

Why don't you two fuck off and go listen to ur new keane records instead of slagging off a truely great british rock band. twats.

And the pretentiousness continues. Wanky music for people that missed out on prog rock of the 70s

Can't wait, another step forward for the greatest live band on the planet! drgonzo2012 - I take it you have no clue what prog rock is or its style and song structure, Muse have at the most 3 progressive songs you tart! And fenton, you like Maximo Park you muppet!

pretentiousness isn't an issue when your good enough to pull it off. Although it does cause jealousy...

It's been said before I know, but they're just a poor mans Radiohead. I don't no how they've got to where they have, playing stadiums with fuck all decent songs! Oh and yes they extremely pretentious, all this bollocks space/otherworldly nonsense all the time, how are people taken in by it?!

Aint a huge Muse but always interested in what they do next, I think for every "rock up and play" Oasis tour we kinda need flame throwers and floating satellites as an alternative. dont get me wrong I like Oasis, but theres only so many times you can listen to Live Forever and a 3 song orchestral finale sounds like worth a listen huh?

Muse have lost the plot. They haven't released a consistently good album for nearly 10 years. Ouch. "90,000 people cannot be wrong." What about the 6 billion who believe in a god.....

Pretentiousness? Fuck off, Muse are absolute geniuses, they've the best sound around and their songs have incredible depth. Any song not about girls nowadays is labelled pretentious by idiots who probably don't have the brainpower to listen to both music and words at the same time. 'Apocalypse Please' must be pretentious, because it is about religious fanaticism, not a bird. Pretention has become a stupid word levelled at truly brilliant artists with any sort of vision by philistines such as drgonzo2012. Muse are the best band around at the moment

evilhanky

Nov 26, 2008

Go back to the 70's then drgonzo2012. Prog rock exists today more than ever and Muse in particular are constantly pushing the envelope. Open you're eyes and ears and step out of the past.

90,000 people cant be wrong? I think you'll find when 90,000 wasted their money and time going to see Muse 90,000 people were wrong...doesn't happen often, but it does happen

I like muse but there are abit too much sometimes.

Clearly the boys are a marmite band (you get the analogy so i'll leave it at that). Personally I'm looking forward to it, although I had hoped by 'hardest' you meant 'heaviest' rock-wise. As for all the other argumentative comments...each to their own....

Muse aren't pretentious, they are ambitious. They have taken it over the top at times, but they are making refreshing music in a currently dismal, sad & Uninspiring music scence. Any band putting so much effort into their music has to be admired. I'd much rather listen to ambitious and striving music then some Floppy haired gonk in a leather jacket whinge about girls.Bring on the new album

supermassive

Nov 26, 2008

Oh, and technically...if you're all being picky...it's more like 180, 000 people, not 90, 000...seeing as they sold it out two days on the trot...and over a million people world-wide for the entire tour...but I digress, these are only small details...

Ah, I always love to read the comments on NME. People slagging each other off although neither can be "right". Lovely freedom of opinion. And yes, I do like Muse myself and I am looking forward to the new album no matter how often people will write about "pretentiousness" etc. ...kind of... liking what you like - and that's it? Just chill out people.

gergbot

Nov 26, 2008

Agreed totally with Aquamarin. Who gives a shit if its pretentious or not? If you really don't like it, don't listen to it.

Oh is it Muse's turn for needless hate now? I wasn't aware the kiddies were off on them already. People confuse confidence for cockiness, ambition for pretentiousness, and "they're just a poor man's radiohead"? What does that even MEAN? Yes, in their early days they DID have some similarities, but what about now? You honestly want to say Fury or Take A Bow sounds anything like radiohead? They're one of the best live bands, incredibly diverse, and constantly changing. You can naturally not enjoy their music by opinion, but hating on this band's talent is blasphemy.

drgonzo2012

Nov 27, 2008

Muse are brilliant at what they do,their musicianship is outstanding...but what they're doing is nothing new, they borrow heavily from the past in the same way that Oasis do. But to a younger generation I can totally understand they appear cutting edge. Listen to the works of Jeff Buckley and all will be revealed. So what, you say? Well, I have a problem with opportunist singers that steal a dead singer's act becuse there's a gap in the market.

Huzzah, new album. I couldn't wait till 2010 though, it'd kill me. Mind you, I'd rather they took their time to create a fantastic album than rush it and make a shit one. Muse rock, shame I've only seen them live once =(

Nov 27, 2008

Muse are an incredible band. Pretentious?? Poor man's Radiohead?? Think for yourselves for a change. All 3 band members are talented musicians with spectacular songs and shows. I cannot wait to hear and see the next album. Luckily for us they're not influenced by popular opinion, and won't limit themselves to whats currently 'fashionable'. They'll go where their music takes them. Thank God.

I like Muse, and I'm glad we have bands like Muse who aren't afraid to be a little larger than life. If you want to play stadiums I think you have to be. However I don't see what is so original about them or how exactly they are pushing the envelope? It's all recycled to me, nothing wrong with that and they do it very well but that's my opinion. My favourite stuff of theirs is their most poppy stuff. I love Supermassive Black Hole, I believe it's their best song. I'm not such a fan of their heavily prog influenced stuff. I think there are plenty of more technically adept metal bands who do prog better, ie. Opeth, Queensryche, Mastodon. I do think Matt Bellamy is an excellent guitarist. I wish he would work on his voice, particularly his breath control so you couldn't hear him inhaling heavily before every line though.

After a fucking great debut album, muse are one of the most disappointing bands around. Way too over-rated by music school pricks who like 'challenging' music. Music snobbery at its very worst. I guess i "wouldn't understand the technicality of their sound.. man"

A lot of answers testify a disrespect. It is not really allowable but it is just like that on a lot of forums and more.... unfortunately. The jealousy, a manner can be of expressing itself very direct or a desire to make point out... Anyway to come back to subject there I am very proud of Muse, it is one of the biggest groups in the world and it do not cease improving. It's on they don't always make the same music, they renew themselves and this walks! That's right which makes that a group is "big". And they get ready to make an even better album and I follow by it on. Their music is very sought-after and I find this brilliant.by going on as this they will stay in the memoires... of attentive persons. =) Merci (Oui je suis Francais ^^)Vivement le nouvel album ! Et surtout la nouvelle tournée qui s'anoncent plus grandiose encore (Avec des UFO ? xD)

Sure everyone has the right for their own music taste and I accept it that there are people out there who can't stand Muse but to attack their fans is the most immature thing, ridiculous and pointless. You can't tell people what bands they are allowed to love. I don't tell you either which bands you should and shouldn't love so chill out and leave the fans alone. Everyone has their own taste!

I am happy that i never had the need to compare bands. To some people music seems to be all about who is best and who is worst. Like a competition. I' d say either you enjoy it or you ignore it. Radiohead and Muse are two of the best bands in Britain atm. They ARE so different too. People should stop trying to tag Muse. Their repertoire is too varied for that.
