New music station launches today (June 24)

Muse's 'Knights Of Cydonia' was the first song played on NME Radio as the station launched today (June 24).

The band won a fierce online poll which saw fans of acts like The Killers, Oasis, The Strokes and more all voting in an online poll to choose the first song played as the station went live at 11am (BST).

There were over 3.5 million votes through NME.COM for the honour of being the first song played on air.

"Cheers, thanks a lot to all the voters," declared Muse's Matt Bellamy on learning the news. "Nice to know that shortly after the song finished on Earth, the galloping horses and laser beams would have reached Cydonia at the speed of light. Good new station, will be listening.”

To tune in simply head to Sky Channel 0184, Virgin Media Channel 975 or listen via NME.COM/Radio, where you will also find NME Radio's schedule, information about the DJs plus details of how you can get involved with requests and more.

The station will be taking requests between 1-2pm (BST) today, so send in your selections and why you want to hear them to studio@nmeradio.co.uk now.

Nice to see so many deaf jealous idiots on here. If you don't like the result, you should've made the effort to vote! Long live MUSE!!!

Epic song by the greatest live band to ever walk the earth! Oasis are a pile of chav crap, they're still stuck in the nineties and their albums from the last 10 years have been absolute garbage! Morning glory is flipping awful!

Criminal - muse's song is average at best - they have better songs aswell so even more outrageous that this wank gets the honour - a poor start for a potentially good radio station. Its a shame it was sorted by an internet poll not talent - as Muse fans are the type to sit mindlessly voting up their band. Everyone knows that Morning Glory is the better song and that will stand the test of time.

How can you cheat? Did all the Muse fans hack the website? I don't think so. Everyone could vote as many times as they liked. Seems there is some justice in the world. Thankfully NME radio has not been forever tainted with having the most overated pile of crap ever that is know as Oasis played first.

Well I would've liked Oasis to win but I also wanted "Love Is Noise" - The Verve to be debuted on there to be honest as it just seemed right to do so. Oh well, Muse are quite good, at least The Strokes didn't win... The Batty's :)

Well thats disappointing. Surely Transmission was the only choice of any relevance.

CedarRoom1998

Jun 24, 2008

the first song to be played on the station should not have been Muse or Oasis but "Transmission" by Joy Division and all you motherfuckers know it.

Muse are on of the next world winning bands and for a new station, it's a good move to play something cutting edge and of course British!

Why is everyone like oh my God why did Muse get such an honour? What honour?- seriously get over it. Muse and Oasis are both spectacularly average and immensely tedious.

I would've been happy with any of those band's tracks, they've all made decent songs, why is everyone getting so annoyed? it's only the first song played, not exactly the ONLY song or something. And how many of you tuned in anyway? Get over yourselves already and enjoy the music.

You are a fully lot! I have enjoyed reading your comments and have had a little giggle! Maybe you should stop worrying about things like this, and learn to spell and be gramatically correct instead. Everyone sounds either crazy or incredibly bitter. Smile! It's just a good pop song! xxxx
