Rage Against The Machine's 'Killing In The Name' sparks Asda furore

The song is played in a branch of the shop in Preston

Rage Against The Machine's 1992 hit 'Killing In The Name' has sparked complaints – after it was played on the shop speakers in a branch of the Asda supermarket chain.

According to the Lancashire Evening Post the song, which features the phrase "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" repeatedly bellowed by singer Zack de la Rocha, was played in the entertainment section of a branch of the shop in Preston.

Shopper Nicola Gahagan complained about the barrage of swear words coming from the speakers, saying, "It was awful – it should have been turned off."

A spokesperson for the supermarket accepted the complaint, saying, "This shouldn't have happened. We're sorry."

It sounds infinately less offensive than the bouncey hardcore and scouse house that the one in Huyton insists on playing to appease drooling, knuckle dragging chavs ever friday.

This is the most interesting thing that will EVER happen in a branch of ASDA. They should be grateful.

That sort of thing happens all the time in various shops. I know of one local high street music shop that plays swearing music all the time, but the thing is the staff are too naieve to turn it off or the music falls on deaf ears (pardon the pun) and no one notices it.

it's better than the mundane shopping music, I would actually shop at asda if they played "killing in the name of". Fucks sake its only a swear word, think have become desentised to fookin swearing. I'm surprised asda have got a RATM album to put on.

"16 years old and it still causes controversy"? Isn't that the general diagnosis of scumbag mothers who shop at Asda?

who decides that fuck is more offensive than any other word, its all been programmed as offensive, fuck that. well done whoever played it.

Too true cancelmysubscription , when you think deeply about, who said Fuck is a swear word, whats so awful about a word that has many other acceptable synomns. The same goes for Shit or Bitch, a bitch is a female dog, a shit is a crap, the alternatives aren't considered Taboo so why should they? it just doesnt make any sense to me to be honest

That's nothing, I once heard "I want to be a hippy and I want to get stoned on mara marijuana" in a branch of Woolworths. Maybe they had a run on the pick and mix that day?

I heard Babyshambles 'Fuck Forever' in my local Tesco about a year ago. It was playing right at the front of the store, and not a single person batted an eyelid...

I've seen RATM 3 times. Munich '94, and Melbourne '08 at the Big Day Out and then at their side show at Festival Hall. If this shopper was half as blown away by their sound as I was...WOW! The Festival slot in the afternoon in '94 blew me away! I was aware of their music, but not their 'presence'! Then the earth literally SHOOK like what I can only imagine the early stages of an eathquake may at the BDO in '08...and then there Fesitval Hall gig. UNBELIEVABLE.

"This shouldn't have happened. We're sorry." Instead of this ASDA should have said "Fuck you, I wont do what you tell me".

I like the use of the word 'furore' in connection to Asda.
