Sex Pistols' John Lydon is set to star in an advert for British butter brand Country Life.

According to Mad.co.uk, Lydon was chosen by the brand because he is a "British icon".

The campaign is set to start soon, although exact dates of broadcast are yet to be announced.

In a statement, Country Life said: "We don't think enough people know Country Life is the only major British butter brand and John gets the message through loud and clear.

"He is seen as a great British icon. His independent views are part of his consumer appeal and his tongue-in-cheek sense of humour shines through in our TV advertising."

I have lost ALL respect for john Lydon now....my admiration for him has fizzled away over the years as his talent appeared to dwindle to nothing.....i thought he stood for something, its not even the "butter" thing its more the erosion of his ideals, that we should treat each other with respect, and ALWAYS tell the truth....his recent behaviour shows us a man who allegedly now attacks women, balls out poor duffy, leaving her in tears at the Mojo awards, and has a team around him who berate Kele from bloc party simply for being a black man with a "black attitude" he, like Morrisey ( the other let down) talk to US about England while sunning themselves in the USA or Rome etc! listen stephen and John, the reasons why you now hate England are the same reasons that WE love it....multicultural, independant, diverse sexualities, equality, hatred of rascism.....the Sex pistols and PIL cds will be sold, along with the Smiths down at the boot sale on sunday xxx

hness do u actually hav any idea about morrissey? So according to u he's against diverse sexualities? Hardly the picture he's been painting for the last 25 years is it? And I just dont get the whole racism thing, just becuase he chooses to look deeper into an issue not just scrape at the surface eg National Front Disco hes branded a racist!

Would everybody stop moaning for one bloody minute. Who cares what Lydon says, thinks, eats, indorses or votes for. The important thing is the music. Never Mind The Bollocks album is revolutionary, groundbreaking, f**cking fantastic - still one of the best albums ever made. Musically, it knocks the socks of albums by the likes Bloc Party, Foals and Razorshite.Anyway, have you heard the shit that come out of Morrissey's mouth. He still make great music though.

He left the country because of constant threats against him and being stabbed by Sun-reader types. Anyone who has actually been to his shows will know (right or wrong) how pro-England he is.If you don't know what you're talking about then shut the hell up and go back to fawning over Pete Doherty.

i dont see why people are saying hes sold outi doubt he demmanded too much money lolzand i think hes having a laugh more than anything and likes the idea of being patriotic (as the ad is)and maybe he really likes the butter
