Last Shadow Puppets cover The Beatles in Liverpool

The Last Shadow Puppets rounded off the third day of the BBC Electric Proms festival last night (October 24) with a set that featured a cover by local legends The Beatles.

Arriving onstage at the Philharmonic Hall to a backdrop of a 16-piece BBC concert orchestra playing the end score of 'The Chamber', Alex Turner and Miles Kane launched into 'In My Room' before playing their debut album title track 'The Age of the Understatement'.

Kane was on chatty form with his hometown crowd, making jokes about playing up to the cameras that were filming the concert for the BBC. Turner was quieter though occasionally exchanged playful banter with his bandmate and drummer James Ford, who produced their album.

Turner and Kane played four covers in the set, the first of which was The Beatles' 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)' from the 1969 'Abbey Road' album, to the delight of the Liverpool crowd.

They also covered Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's 'Paris Summer' and invited Ipso Facto's Rosalie Cunningham, who they introduced as "our friend Rosie", to duet with Kane on the song.

The band then went straight into David Bowie's 'In The Heat of The Morning', which they recorded on 'The Age Of The Understatement EP' earlier this year.

The audience, which included The Zutons, The Coral and Candie Payne, was seated for the gig but upon playing 'Meeting Place', Turner said: "You can stand up if you like Liverpool."

Prompting swaying and dancing, the audience remained standing through the encore where the The Last Shadow Puppets performed a doo-wop rendition of Leonard Cohen's 'Memories' from the 1977 'Death of a Ladies' Man' album, inviting the female members of the orchestra to the stage to provide backing vocals.

The group then finished off the night with climactic finisher 'Standing Next To Me'.

The gig is one of many to take place out of London, a new development for the Electric Proms, which is this year in collaboration with Liverpool. Tonight (October 25) Razorlight also play the Philharmonic Hall.
