Radiohead had the contention, The Raconteurs the speed, yet when it comes to the art of shrouding a rush-release in mystery, Beck’s forthcoming ‘Modern Guilt’ has 14 years of eluding genres behind it. Fortunately, though, he’s saved us from speculation as to a One Night Only direction and sneaked this online: a hypnotic slab of ’60s psych-pop sporadically punctuated with ghostly vocals, haunting pauses and eruptions into nothing short of sonic cornucopia. It may not necessarily be the direction we’ll be hearing come the rumoured release, but with Danger Mouse at the helm, it does hint at something truly exciting.
